From crossword puzzles while the eggs cook, to windblown hearts, to finding the missing bone in the dishwasher; a few things that have been happening in our world
lately
(This post may contain affiliate links)
Sipping – Golden milk – which I'm just getting on board with. Better late than never?
Favorite App – Way of Life – It's great for tracking habits, is simple to set up, and will even create beautiful charts and graphs. A few on my list? Minutes spent walking, yoga, weight lifting, no sugar, meditation, and “today have I treated myself the way I would a friend?”
For Dinner – Wedge salads nearly every night this week. Oh my goodness, they're so addicting
Reading – Heating & Cooling: 52 Micro-Memoires and I Wrote This Because I Love You (which I downloaded after I listened to the funny interview with the author on Fresh Air)
Feeling Hopeful – We're (thinking) about buying a house that suits us a little better. So we're going to look at a couple this weekend
Loving – Walks outside. The weather in Iowa went from cold and dreary last week to the mid-forties and sunny. It feels like heaven. Today, between my morning and afternoon walks, I greeted four people, six dogs, two stray kitty cats and a little kid on a Spiderman bike

Guilty pleasure – Salty pretzels, honey roasted peanuts, milk chocolate shavings in creamy coconut yogurt. The only trick is having the willpower to eat just a little bit. So, so good
For more sensible snacking – Michelle Tam's PB&J Energy Balls (Paleo) and the Pioneer Woman's Deviled Eggs. All in all, they're both a very good idea
Reminding Myself – To be fearless when it comes to cooking for others. Certainly, it'll wreak havoc on the dish pile, but it's far more nourishing than ordering carry-out. (Keep a box of mac & cheese in the pantry if the grandkids don't like the tuna casserole, but whatever, they'll love the tuna casserole)
Mantra for the week – From Dana James on self-worth
Can't stop thinking about – The Startling Link Between Sugar and Alzheimers and A Sleep Scientist Warns About Walking Through Life in an Underslept State [via The Atlantic and NPR]
Always with me – My notebook. Daily, minutely, it seems. At home, it sits next to the apples and a few bruised avocados. Otherwise, my jacket pocket. A neighbor asks if I write lists, so I don't forget things at Target, and I tell her, yes, but also so I don't forget to go to Target. She smiles, knowingly

Wondering – What to do when our cat turns into a terrorist. Every once in a while, I notice all of the other pets have gone deep into hiding. “Do you want a treat? How about a toy? Maybe a nap on the electric blanket?” With each suggestion, his fur rises a bit more; his ears point further back. I turn away. He bites me on the leg. A trail of blood on the carpet as I shoo him into the bathroom. A half-hour later he offers a quiet meow, gathers himself, and purrs
A grown man off to start his day
Have you watched? – Fargo (one of Rolling Stone's greatest tv shows of all time) We've stayed up way too late so many nights to watch “just 15 more minutes” and then “just 15 minutes more.”
Also watching – David Letterman's My Guest Needs No Introduction or one of the 100 best movies on Netflix (if we're stumped for ideas)
While I'm driving – I think about The Pope's wisdom about driving. We're all the “artisans of the common good.”
Remembering – A spritz of lavender, and an ice-cold drink of water on even the most frenzied of days. Also sunshine, a warm shower, and a kiss from your husband. Simply don any air mask you've got and breathe it all in
Wishing – For you a wonderful weekend. As always, sending lots of love. Thank you so much for being here
xo

House hunting is always fun and I’ve been enjoying the sunshine for the last two weeks – well, it rained a couple of days, but sunny most of the week. Heading to a wedding in Savannah this weekend so I’ll enjoy the sun even more.
It looks like you are keeping up nicely with your life, with small but happy making moments. I never experienced my cats to be terrorists though, they never bite or scratch. However, my lady cat hates when I leave her alone for too long and gives me the “no talking” treatment for a couple of days after my return. 🙂
We have done more salads and simple meals this week. I have been working on my family history again, finally. Finished reading The Lost Order which totally enjoyed.
That golden milk looks and sounds really good! I have been wanting to read more lately too, but I’ve been so busy.
Ahh I love this. To be fearless when cooking for others is really interesting, I always try to play it safe as I worry about pleasing everyones tastebuds, I will certainly try to take more risks!
Enjoy your weekend as well! I’d enjoy wedge salads for dinner. I do not cook for others though. I’m a terrible cook. I haven’t tried golden milk before!
I always look forward to the weekend. It’s a time for me and my husband to recuperate and just relax. We would also check out the local sights when we feel like going out. Thanks for all the links! I appreciate them.
We are off work this weekend so we are spending it outdoors all day long. Lots of play time for Natalia and hopefully some rest for us too.
Oh I feel ya….Wedge salads done well are the absolute best arent they! I always try and replicate Miller and Carters (FULL of cheese ha ha)
Best of luck with your house hunt. I’m not sure what to say about the cat. I’ve always had cats and have never had one behave like that. We did rescue 2 ferals years ago and they kept to themselves for quite some time. If he comes back in a calmer mood maybe he prefers to initiate affection?
I have the Golden milk. It’s actually pretty good.
Hope you figure out your crazy cat! I love cats. It may mean your cat isn’t playing enough. Who knows.
Good luck with house!
OMG that image by Dallas Clayton is just adorable!! Checked out the wedge salad recipe. Looks so yummy, need to try it! Have a great weekend!
xoxo
Annie
I have never even heard of golden milk, but it sure looks pretty! How strange about the cat… My gandma has a cat that’s a little bully to the others too.
Netflix and chill sounds like the perfect weekend! Also, what is golden milk?
I love the way you have documented your week like this – such a unique thing to do! Is golden milk actually milk or is it a dairy free alternative?
Wow, I had to check how this golden milk is being cooked and event saved the recipe for the later 🙂 Your post is just what I need before this weekend! Thank you for sharing your love and wish you all the best!
Happy FRIDAY!! I hope you have a great weekend too! I need to check out that app you are using. Sounds like a great option. I hope that you have some success with the house hunting too! GOOD LUCK!
I’m glad that you can enjoy the weather because the weather here in Philadelphia is a blizzard right now . I almost died earlier
Have a wonderful weekend, Alison! I think I may need to return to the ‘Flix. I haven’t had my subscription for over a year, and I really would like to see David Letterman’s show as well as a few others. Good luck on the house hunting. Hopefully the weather will cooperate 🙂
Happy Weekend! These are definitely some incredible ways to enjoy the weekend. When we work so hard during the week it’s very important to take advantage of our weekends. Sounds like you have a great weekend heading your way!
What’s golden milk? I will research about this.
And I shall remember the lavender spray. Sometimes, I really need it when my head seems like it would explored from all the tension.
I’m the same way when it comes to cooking for others! I am so confident in the kitchen but the moment I know guests will be staying for supper, I get self-conscious with what I serve.
LOVE this post. Just the ordinary ins and outs of life and the joy of reminiscing. Makes one realize la vida ain’t that bad. BB2U
So many great things you are documenting and sharing with us. I havent got on the golden milk trend, I would love to check out the Netflix 100 best movie list and the weather is getting a little better where i am at too.
Have a fantastic and relaxing weekend! I like that you are being fearless about your cooking. I will tell my partner he need to engage in some fearlessness when trying cooking. Al little encouragement goes a long way.
I love the mantra. Words to live by for sure. Writing a list to make sure you go to Target is also very relatable.
Going for a walk is my favorite thing to do and greeting some people on your way is a great way to interact and exercise your face thru smiling. Our weather is crazy out here too. It’s warm one day and then rain follows and yesterday it snowed again!
I need to remind myself too to be fearless, that unfortunately I always forgot. My Guilty pleasure now is Squish :D. Good luck with your house hunting, that’s so exciting especially when it’s time to decorate 🙂
I have heard about golden milk before but haven’t tried it yet. I googled the health benefits and now I am convinced that I have to make this healthy beverage the soonest. Thank you for the timely reminder. I really have to mind my health this year.
A spritz of lavender is always a good idea. I love the scent and how it relaxes me after a long day. I am hoping for a relaxing weekend.
After this week I could really use a few days. I hope you do the same!
I hope your weekend is equally delicious! I just finished one heck of week.
These sound like great ideas for a great weekend! I would love to some some of these things!!
That golden milk looks really delightful. and I hope that you are having a great weekend. Thanks for this reminder. Awesome!!
I am going to have to try this golden milk thing. I love milk but this does look kind of strange. I am definitely curious about the health benefits to be derived. Also, I will have to come and check out Fargo sometime. I have watched Fargo the movie in the past and was curious about the TV show. Thanks for the recommendation.
Enjoy your weekend too. I have been super busy this week but it’s nice to hear about your little happy moments
Golden milk sounds so interesting! I might have to try making it sometime! Nice post! I always like reading what others are up to lately.
You know for the firstg time in a long time I had a great weekend thus far. Yesterday I did a deep clean of the house, all finished before 11am. I then strolled to the shops to grab some groceries for some food posts and made a delicious soup, started a new book which is amazing and I am looking forward to getting my daughter, doing some homework and more reading after I’ve cooked dinner.
I have a feeling that I need that Way of Life app in my life, it sounds perfect for tracking things especially since I’ve following a new diet! Thanks for all the links that you shared as well. I hope you have a fantastic weekend. I’m leaning towards having a relaxing one.
Ah, that sounds like a great time you’re having. I especially love the image about the strangers on your post — that’s so true! If we are just a little bit more open, things can turn quite pleasant. Anyhow, my weekend is packed with work. I have a lot of catching up to do!
I have never heard of Golden Milk before. I want to try it though its seems to be a healthy choice. Thanks for sharing,
I must say also I have never ever heard of golden milk either! It’s so important to take advantage of the weekend, I found myself taking advantage of my weekends more and more especially since I work hard during the week. I would love to try the wedge salad I saw your post on that one also and man it looks delicious.
I’ve recently discovered golden milk and all its benefits! Sometimes I drink it too! I had never heard before about Way of Life App: I want to download it and see if I can use it and ameliorate my work-personal life balance and rhythms and if I can get better with food too.
Love this! Happy weekend dear, hope you’ll have a funny and relaxing one! I have 2 terrorist dogs(ihih they do so many crazy things), planning to walk out and play with them in the countryside and having lovely family time this we!
Haven’t heard of the golden milk, now I want to look for it. Hope you enjoy a lovely weekend as well. I enjoyed this post a lot. You are making me ponder about my weekend as well.
LOVING this post and your style of writing. Going to use the overused “authentic” to describe what BB thinks about them. Hope your weekend was good too. BB2U
I have never had a wedge salad! I really need to get on that band wagon and make them for dinner this week!
I hope you find a house that’s perfect! It’s really nice when you find a dish that you love so much you could eat it almost every day! I have to really try that wedge salad now. I hope you have a lovely weekend!
Such a great roundup! I feel like I learned so much: I’d never heard of golden milk, but of course now I want to try it! And I am sooo there with you on the wedge salads. I’m currently on a quest to eat more greens, and salads make it easier. Love a good wedge with blue cheese crumbles!
I have never try the golden milk and would love to try out once. Not sure we have it over here. I would love to find out why it was called Golden milk, it is due to the color or just the brand? You look like having really healthy lifestyle, mentally and physically. I feel like you are feeding yourself with both healthy food and good books. That’t the lifestyle I hope to achieve.
I’m starting to like being outside again too! The weather in Toronto is getting sunnier (it’s still pretty cold) and the sun is setting later – both good signs of spring around the corner!
Seems like you have been up to a lot! Love the sound of a wedge salad, I am off to find it in a minute. Also I love the sound of that app, it sounds exactly like what I need!
Ahhh….How perfect this seems all written out. Golden Milk? Haven’t heard of it but it does have me intrigued.
Love reading this post. Good luck with the house hunt. What amazed me the golden chai. Never had it in my life before but I have tasted turmeric tea. It’s the first thing your mom gives in India when you get cold. I am going to give it a try.
I’m halfway househunting and I wish you luck. It’s always great to have a peaceful weekend which are few and far between on my end lately. Too much going on.
It’s such a refreshing post…there’s something about lists about things we do that is so appealing. I would like to try that app, “Way of life”, I need something to keep track and organise my habits. I get really scared of cooking for others though I do a decent job at it but it really does intimidate me. I haven’t watched Fargo but will definitely check it out now.
We hit the 70s this week and it is bliss. Did you know that a lot of doctors are calling Alzheimer’s diabetes type 3? There’s a definite link there.
This is such a great post. That golden milk looks really delightful and good luck to your girl on your house hunting.
Ali, you have a gift for telling a story, of course, we kept reading. I hope you have the best weekend! xx
I like the concept of the “way of life” app, it sounds great. Also so with you with terrorist cats, I don’t know why they do that!
I love that you always have a notebook. It’s something that I’ve started to carry with me as well. I get ideas but as soon as I move on to the next thing on my list (or help the kids) I forget it.
I just love reading at weekends. But these household works completely drained my energy. This posts give me some good ideas to creatively organize my weekend. Good one.
I’m super with you on the deviled eggs and wedge salads – they are two of my favorites! I haven’t started Fargo yet, but it is on my list! I’ll have to check it out soon.
I’m definitely going to check out the app way of life, I need something to help keep track of a lot of thing and this sound like it. Lately i tend to get lazy over the weekend but I guess I will be more organised
WEDGE SALADS…. are life…. seriously my favorite thing, and I’m pretty sure when I am done with them they are not healthy anymore.
The link between sugar and Alzheimer’s is insane. So is the link between carbs/wheat and inflammatory diseases! It’s insane!
That golden milk looks delightful. Anyways, Hope you had a wonderful weekend. and that app sounds pretty interesting.
Love these type of posts. I like the sound of the way of life app am going to Check it out. I also like the sound of golden milk yum.
I love to read what you’ve been up to, I found many interesting things I want to try and watch now! Also thanks for linking to the Pope words about driving! that was very inspiring!
These cookies are fabulous! My husband loved them and said his mom used to call them “frogs” so that’s what we call them. No matter, they sure disappear quickly!
For me, a peaceful and delicious weekend will be cuddling with my boyfriend, watching some videos while getting some nice simple food. I like walking the dogs with him too when we visit Malaysia.
I have been enjoying watching David Letterman’s interview as well. My fav is Obama’s he is just too cool. Great post
