Have A Happy Fall Weekend

September 21, 2018

Happy Saturday!  What are you up to this weekend?

(This post may contain affiliate links)

Mostly I’m looking forward to the first day of fall

Here in Iowa, the leaves are starting to change, there’s the first chill in the air, and I love the sunlight with all of its September clarity.  Walking around today it was fun to see lots of sweaters, corduroys, and pumpkin lattes

True confessions?  It’s also my favorite time of year for seasonal candy.  I can’t help but think of my grandfather, who always kept a candy jar on his kitchen counter when I was a kid.  In the fall it was filled with candy corn and the weird little pumpkins that I always ate first

I’m really looking forward to my Saturday morning trip to the farmers market.  It’s always fun to pet new puppies, people watch, try something new for breakfast, and walk home with a bouquet of pretty flowers for the kitchen

But most of all, I want to pass the time doing a little of this, and a little of that.  You know, sleeping in, a trip to Trader Joes, (hopefully) a smoothie, a dip in the Olympic-size(!) swimming pool at the YMCA, and a few hours on the sofa.  I wish that for you as well

Especially the smoothie

For the weekend, a few things I’ve been loving lately

True confessions?  When I lost my job a couple of months ago, I wasn’t sure where to begin.  I didn’t even have a resume, and when I was hired for my previous position, I’d answered an ad in the newspaper(!)  After floundering around for a while, I signed up for an online career coaching site, watched all of their YouTube videos, and did everything they said.  Within three weeks, I had an offer.  I can’t say enough good things

I’m riding my bike pretty much everywhere these days and loving this messenger bag

On my nightstand: Claire Tomalin’s memoir.  My goodness, what a life she’s had

Hooked on classic movies as of late.  Have you seen The Woman in the Window?

Excited to start cooking from my latest cookbook.  Especially the dumplings, pesto, and katletihi (mini meatloaf/meatballs)

Speaking of cookbooks; there are so many good ones coming out soon     [via The Kitchen]

A woman in the elevator smelled so good that I couldn’t help but ask what she was wearing(!)

May we all have a friend who offers us lip balm, a swig of her apple pie moonshine, and some really great advice

Is anyone else addicted to Weelicious’s Smoothie Project?

I had a dinner date with my dad this week.  While it was fun to have him all to myself, mostly it reminded me how wonderful it is to have someone to share a meal with.  One of life’s simple pleasures that I’ll never again take for granted

Friends, whatever you’re up to this weekend, I hope you have a good one!

Sounds like you have had a really good week. And yes, having dinner with a close friend or loved one is something never to be taken for granted. It is quite a beautiful thing. I wish Septembers were like that here in So Cal. We have more schizophrenic weather. We have 90 days and 50 degree nights. So you may start out bundled up in the morning, having to strip as much as you legally can by midday, and then have to put all those layers back on at night. And you never feel that fall breeze until November here. I also miss the colors of other places. Although there are some really amazing trees out here for sure. As for the rest of your week . . . I’m totally into classic films. I used to be a TCM and AMC junkie (when AMC actually played classic movies.).
Although I don’t believe I have seen that one. I will have to check out that career center on Youtube. It does sound interesting.

Thank-you, my friend. Can I put in a post request for a fun twist on classic films? I’m betting you have a lot of Film Noir fans out there ??‍♀️

Ohhh this sounds like a perfect weekend, wish I come out of the chaos I am into right now and get back to my routine which was similar to this 🙂

Congrats on the new job! It sounds like it will be a good and interesting change! I also love fall candy! Candy corns are some of my favorite candies! They really don’t exist here in Europe, which makes me sad.

I enjoy fall myself but winter is another story. Good luck with the new job.

Love how you are making the most of your weekend! It’s always nice to share a meal with someone else, and even better when it’s with a parent! If you were closer, I’d share a meal with you! 🙂

I can’t wait for the weekend because my husband is taking the kids to visit his mom. While I’d love to go along, I’m looking forward to time alone. For me to do what I wish, when I wish, is what I’ve been craving. I can’t overstate how luxurious an empty house feels on the super-rare occasions it happens. I did not know this about myself before I had kids.

What a beautiful cat. I have been looking forward to Autumn (Fall) and I am happy it is finally here. The brown leaves look so beautiful.

This is not a comment on this post so much as a book recommendation (if you don’t already know about this one): Hidden Nature by Alys Fowler. It might only be available in the UK at the moment, but I think it’s one you’d want to seek out. Her passion for plants mirrors yours for food, and she has been on a similar personal journey. I just love your blog — all the best to you.
