We sipped our smoothies
in a corner booth .. far from the fray
The two of us in different seasons of life .. though .. in many ways .. very similar. She in college .. just beginning to find her way .. me in my 40s .. more often than not .. wondering if I'm doing much of the same
I have the privilege of mentoring her as she takes her first steps .. on the journey to better health
“Where are you at? Whatever you'd like to share .. “
The words came slowly at first .. less than supportive family members .. days filled with summer school .. a job .. friends .. a love more wrong than right .. oh, and now this diet thing .. there was that too
“That's a lot on your plate, my Dear. Be honest with yourself .. can you do it all? More important .. can you do it all WELL?”
Her voice softened .. eyes gazing down at the table .. “I don't know .. it seems like whatever I do .. I'm never good enough anyway”
Ouch .. that one hit close to home
“Let's have a small conversation about success .. “
In the days following .. she hasn't been far from my mind. How easy it is to be swept away by the definitions of success and self-worth fed to us by the world .. never stopping to question .. never occurring to us that we could
Where does one begin in a culture whose measuring stick has become the number of likes we have on Facebook .. the number of comments for that post .. or the number of “friends” one has to their online name.
I often wonder if it's possible for anyone to EVER feel good enough .. thin enough .. safe enough .. certain enough .. liked enough .. promoted enough .. or even .. loved enough
Food for thought
It's late this evening as I type .. Memorial Day weekend coming to a close .. the craving for mental solace stronger than need for sleep .. a midnight snack by my side. A quick and healthy smoothie .. blueberries and bananas add flavor and natural sweetness
Hemp Heart Seeds and an optional scoop of vanilla protein powder give it a protein boost . A handful of leafy greens to round it out.
ps: I often blend my nut butter with water to start off my smoothie .. which makes a cheater's nut milk of sorts .. then I'll add the other ingredients
- 1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
- 1 frozen banana
- 6 or 7 large basil leaves
- 1 Tbsp peanut butter (** any other nut better to tahini will also work)
- 2½ Tbsp hemp seeds
- handful of greens (spinach or kale are great)
- water or nut milk of choice to thin .. as needed
- optional: scoop of unflavored or vanilla protein powder
- Put all ingredients in a blender & blend on high until smooth & creamy.
- Adjust the liquid at the end for desired consistency.
- If you like a smoothie that's a little runnier .. add more liquid. If you'd like your smoothie thicker .. add a few ice cubes
